Welcome to the website of the Channel Classic Circuit 2009.
The aim of the circuit is to provide a co-ordinated programme of Classic Regattas, with harmonised rules of eligibility and handicapping, in and around the English Channel.
It is organised by the joint committee of the participating regattas and we hope it will raise the profile of classic regattas in the Channel and give increased opportunities for classics to race together in our Home Waters.

Each regatta is organised independently.
There is no central secretariat for this circuit, so enquiries and entry applications should be directed to the organisers of each regatta.
Notices of Races will be published by the organisers of each regatta in due course.
GUIDELINES ON RULES AND ELIGIBILITY

Rules of eligibility and handicapping for all regattas in the circuit follow the harmonised guidelines below. However, these are only guidelines, so there will be differences between regattas, so you will need to check the Notice of Race for each regatta.

HANDICAPPING

The main handicap system for the circuit is IRC*, which has proved to be excellent for mixed bermudan and gaff rigged classic fleets. We are aware that the cost of IRC certification may deter some people, so most regattas, except the BCYC Cowes Regatta, also offer racing in classes using an alternative, free or cheaper, handicap system.
* The Suffolk Yacht Harbour regatta will use its own handicap system.

ELIGIBILITY

All the regattas accept entries from classic bermudan and gaff rigged yachts designed and first launched before December 31st 1975. Approved more recent yachts of traditional design and ‘Spirit of Tradition’ yachts may also be eligible. Approved GRP classics may be eligible in some regattas. Acceptance of entries is at the discretion of the organisers of each regatta.

ORIGINALITY

It is important for the integrity and heritage of classic yachting that owners strive to maintain, as far as possible, the original character of the yacht’s design. It is accepted that many yachts have been modified through the years and, provided such modifications to the hull, rig and accommodation are in keeping with the ‘spirit of the period’ they are acceptable.

Modern deck hardware and sail handling gear (eg: self-tailing winches, headsail furling, rod kickers and fully battened mainsails) are normally accepted.

There may be specific rules for each regatta concerning the use of high tech. materials in sails, spars and hulls. Where these apply, they will be stated in the NoR for the regatta.

The organisers of each regatta may exclude any yacht that they deem to have been inappropriately modified.
